Installation of a New Parish Priest

Introductory Notes:

1. The installation of a new parish priest always takes place within the Eucharistic celebration to emphasize the primordial function of the parish priest. The Mass for the day with its assigned readings and prayers will be used for the liturgy.

2. The rite of installation takes place after the homily.

3. After the homily, the Archbishop is seated in front of the altar and says:

Archbishop: Let the appointment letter of the new parish priest be read.

A senior priest in the vicariate reads the letter.

Archbishop: Beloved brother in Christ, you must renew your Profession of Faith in the presence of the people to be entrusted to your pastoral care.

Parish Priest:

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and life everlasting.

Amen.

INTERROGATION:

ARCHBISHOP: It is the duty of the priest to proclaim the Word of God. He must study the Bible and meditate on its message, believe what he reads, teach what he believes and practice what he teaches.

Are you willing to co-operate with your Archbishop in preaching Christ in season and out of season, explaining to all the Word of God?

PRIEST: I am, with the help of God.

ARCHBISHOP The priest gathers together the people of God for prayer and sustains then as they go forth to carry out the mission of the Church to the world.

Are you ready to pray with the people as well as for them, and to lead and encourage them in their apostolate in the world?

PRIEST: I am, with the help of God.

ARCHBISHOP: The priest cares for the people by celebrating with them the Sacraments.

When he baptizes, he brings men and women into the Family of God; he witnesses their marriage vows; in the Sacrament of Reconciliation he forgives sins in the name of Christ and His Church; with holy oil, he strengthens and consoles the sick and the dying.

Will you prepare your people by wise instruction to receive the Sacraments worthily and fruitfully?

PRIEST I will, with the help of God.

ARCHBISHOP: It is the priest’s privilege and duty to celebrate the Sacrifice of the Mass and to proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes, to feed the people with the Body and Blood of Christ.

Are you willing to celebrate the Mass faithfully for the living and dead as the Church ordains for the glory of God and the sanctification of Christ’s people?

PRIEST: I am, with the help of God.

ARCHBISHOP The priest is called to promote justice and peace among all peoples and to share the Good News with all who are persecuted, marginalized and underprivileged in society.

Are you willing to strive for justice and understanding among all people, based on the Truth of the Gospel?

PRIEST I am, with the help of God.

ARCHBISHOP: It is the priest’s privilege and duty to sustain and guide his people along the way to unity with all Christians and to seek the gifts of unity and peace for the world.

Are you willing to work zealously to overcome division and to seek the unity for which Jesus prayed?

PRIEST: I am, with the help of God.

ARCHBISHOP: The priest must be without reproach and his endeavor must give no ground for scandal for he is the ambassador of Christ.

Are you resolved to carry out your duties as a parish priest giving no grounds for reproach?

PRIEST I am, with the help of God.

ALL STAND

ARCHBISHOP: Let us pray.

God our Father, look upon this priest, your servant and co-worker with his Archbishop in this parish.

May his word and example inspire and guide your people here and may he and all those in his care come to the joy of everlasting life.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Archbishop stands and sits the new parish priest in the Archbishop’s Chair. The new parish priest is greeted by the Archbishop and the concelebrating priests.

The Prayers of the Faithful are omitted. The presentation of gifts follows. Mass proceeds as usual.
